Fran Kirby shook off suggestions she might feel intimidated by the new faces in England’s camp after she returned from her long absence in the 1-0 victory over Belgium on Friday boxing
Kirby had not played for England since the Lionesses faced the Czech Republic in a friendly last October and missed this year’s World Cup after undergoing knee surgery boxing
The Chelsea midfielder received a warm reception by the sold-out crowd in Leicester when she came on in the 65th minute of the Nations League clash boxing
Kirby said: “It feels like I haven’t been away boxing
Obviously, I know a lot of the girls from playing against them boxing
“Everyone who has come in has brought a fresh face and a new standard boxing
It has been nice to be in training around them and getting to know them more personally boxing
“I don’t think I need to mould in at all, I’m probably one of the oldest players here now boxing
I think I know what I’m doing boxing
“It’s nice to be on the pitch, it’s nice to get a win, so I’m happy boxing
“I’ve been working really hard over the summer to try and get back as quickly as possible and to be involved tonight was really special boxing
”Kirby, who has suffered a spate of injuries and fitness issues in recent years, announced in May she would be going under the knife to fix a knee issue that had long plagued her, with doctors determining surgery was the only way to rectify the situation boxing
The 2019-20 season saw Kirby diagnosed with pericarditis, a heart condition, and in 2022 she was sidelined with a fatigue-related illness that led to her installing an oxygen tent at her home boxing
As for this most recent problem, Kirby said: “At the beginning it was quite tough because you don’t really know when the end of the injury is boxing
I accepted quite early on that I wasn’t going to be part of the World Cup squad, not that it made it any easier boxing
“I was able to support the girls and feel the same emotions that they were feeling and going through boxing
Being back with them now just means that all of the hard work paid off in the summer boxing
”Friday’s victory moved the Lionesses up to second place in Group One, with a quick turnaround before they face Belgium again in Tuesday’s return fixture boxing
England need to finish top to advance in the tournament, which also serves as a qualifier for next summer’s Olympics in Paris boxing
Kirby’s reception from supporters was perhaps second-loudest to only former Leicester goalkeeper Mary Earps, who seemed to elicit a roar every time she made a stop en route to earning England a first clean sheet since they faced Nigeria in the last-16 at the World Cup boxing
Kirby said: “The support that I’ve had over the past year has been incredible from fans – national team and Chelsea boxing
I can’t fault anyone for their support and that has been really pivotal for me coming back boxing
“It’s frustrating when I’m injured and can’t be out there, so to hear that reception when I came on is really special and it’s something that I won’t forget boxing
“I’ve been working really hard to get back out on the pitch as much as possible and I want to stay there boxing

World Rugby has approved plans to set up a new international league competition as part of part of a radical shake-up of the global calendar boxing
The bi-annual tournament is to be launched in 2026 and will be made up of two divisions of 12 teams, with promotion and relegation commencing from 2030 boxing
Matches will be staged in the July and November international windows boxing
In addition to a competition that has been tentatively named the ‘Nations Cup’, World Rugby’s council has given the go-ahead to the expansion of the World Cup to 24 teams in time for Australia 2027 boxing
The revised format will consist of six pools of four teams and will see the creation of a round of 16 to take place before the quarter-finals boxing
The top two teams from each group will automatically qualify, as well as the best four third-placed teams boxing
Even though the number of sides is to be increased, the adjustment means the World Cup can be reduced from seven to six weeks from October 1 to November 13, 2027, while providing the same number of minimum rest days boxing
The draw for the next competition will take place in January 2026 in the hope of avoiding the lopsided groups seen in France over the last two months boxing
As part of the changes, the international window for November has been lifted from three to four weekends and the Six Nations will lose one of its fallow weeks boxing
It has yet to be decided which break week of the Six Nations will be removed but from 2026 the competition will reduced from seven to six weeks to free up an international weekend for the Nations Cup in November boxing
The top division of the Nations Cup will be run by Six Nations and SANZAR unions while the second division will be overseen by World Rugby boxing
The competition will culminate in a final boxing between teams from the northern and southern hemispheres boxing
World Rugby state that the new competition structure, which enshrines British and Irish Lions tours in their existing format, will also provide an increased number of fixtures boxing between the game’s heavyweights and emerging nations boxing
“A new era is about to begin for our sport boxing
An era that will bring certainty and opportunity for all,” World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont said boxing
“An era that will support the many, not the few, and an era that will supercharge the development of the sport beyond its traditional and often self-imposed boundaries boxing
All boats will rise together boxing
”World Rugby’s 51-member council voted on the changes on Tuesday but only just reached the required 75 per cent majority boxing
“Certain countries will have their own views on matters,” Beaumont said boxing
“I would like to think that around the room there might have been a few dissenters but on the whole there was a pretty significant vote in favour of these new competitions boxing
”Criticism of the new format centres around not enough being done for less established nations, especially after the likes of Portugal and Uruguay have surpassed expectations at the World Cup, but World Rugby chief executive Alan Gilpin sees it as a radical improvement to the status quo boxing
“Is it perfect? Probably not boxing
Is it a hell of a lot boxing better than the current situation? Absolutely,” Gilpin said boxing
