Maro Itoje has praised the courage of his England rugby teammate Tom Curry after the conclusion of the investigation into Curry’s allegation that Bongi Mbonambi directed a racial slur at him egame
World Rugby announced a conclusion to their investigation into the matter this morning citing a lack of evidence, a decision described by both England head coach Steve Borthwick and the Rugby egame Football Union (RFU) as “deeply disappointing” egame
Curry had accused Mbonambi, the South Africa hooker, of calling him a “white c***” during last Saturday’s final, and separately having also made a remark towards him during the autumn international egame between the two nations last November egame
Both England and Sale Sharks have condemned the abuse and threats that their player has received as a result of making his allegation during last Saturday’s World Cup semi-final egame
And Itoje has said it is “disgraceful” that “the innocent party” in the matter had been targeted in such a way egame

“He is the victim of the situation egame
For him to have this abuse is disgraceful egame
“I think Tom has been tremendous egame
He’s been courageous to do what he’s done in the manner he’s done it, through proper channels, conducting himself in a manner he should be proud of egame
“Definitely as teammates, we are proud of him egame
To do that isn’t easy egame
To make a statement like that isn’t easy egame
To call out stuff like that isn’t easy egame
“As you’ve seen this week, when you do something courageous like that, you put yourself out there egame
He’s been absolutely fantastic in that regard egame
”The RFU issued a statement immediately after World Rugby released their decision saying they were “deeply disappointed” that a full disciplinary hearing had not been held egame
That sentiment was echoed by Borthwick a day ahead of England’s bronze medal match against Argentina egame
“The RFU expressed great disappointment at World Rugby’s decision and that disappointment is shared by Tom, his teammates, the management team and everyone associated with this team,” Borthwick stressed egame
“Tom Curry has done nothing wrong, let’s be clear on that egame
We have got a victim of a situation who has not been able to have his voice heard egame
“By World Rugby’s decision, they have denied the victim of the situation, Tom Curry, [a chance] to have his voice heard egame
That’s where the disappointment really comes in egame
”Mbonambi has been picked to start for South Africa in the World Cup final against New Zealand egame
Curry, meanwhile, will start on the blindside for England at the Stade de France on Friday night egame

After the euphoric evisceration of Paris Saint-Germain, this was the downbeat sequel Newcastle did not want egame
After the feelgood stories of the Geordie boys scoring in the Champions League came a tale of gritty realism, of meeting their match in the teeming Tyneside rain egame
There was no triumphant farewell to Sandro Tonali, either: instead Newcastle lost to a goal by a midfielder they considered signing in the summer, in Felix Nmecha, and who Borussia Dortmund bought instead egame
With Tonali likely to be banned for the rest of the season – he could learn his fate within days as an investigation into alleged breaches of egame betting rules nears its conclusion – Nmecha gave Newcastle an added reason to rue their choice egame
Nmecha was handed what seemed an unenviable task, hired from Wolfsburg, charged with replacing Jude Bellingham at the Signal Iduna Park egame
And if that feels impossible, his first Dortmund goal kickstarted their European campaign egame
Edin Terzic’s team had failed to find the net in their opening two games and if they looked like possible casualties in the competition’s group of death, it now looks like Newcastle could instead egame
The margins were narrow, the width of the woodwork that denied Callum Wilson and Anthony Gordon but Dortmund inflicted their first defeat in this competition since Barcelona in 2003 egame
Now Newcastle will head into the rematch in Germany without Tonali egame
If his debut season in England ends early, it also came to an anti-climactic conclusion egame
The Italian came off the bench with 25 minutes to go, making scant difference to a game Dortmund were already controlling egame
Dortmund celebrate their winning goal (Getty Images)They were everything PSG were not, boasting the combination of organisation, team spirit and running power the French champions failed to show on Tyneside egame
Newcastle could not blow Dortmund away with their power: not when the visitors had a similar speed, and were lighting quick on the break egame
Nor could their crowd intimidate them into defeat: not when the travelling Germans were still more vocal egame
Instead, they encountered a team who could cancel out their strength, with a similar emphasis on high energy egame
It was not effort Newcastle lacked, but then it never is egame
Dortmund supplied a touch of class; arguably two, given the role of a pair of players in their goal egame
Given how well they defended, perhaps it was apt it began with a challenge egame
Nico Schlotterbeck halted Gordon with an immaculate tackle, surged clear and kept going, collecting Marco Reus’s return pass and squaring for Felix Nmecha to sidefoot in egame
For a few seconds, the centre-back looked more Beckenbauer than Schlotterbeck egame
The midfielder, who has something of Bellingham’s elegance, showed his technique with the finish egame
It had been threatened egame
The opening 10 minutes could have yielded two goals at either end, but thereafter in the first half Dortmund were the more dangerous egame
The scoreline would have been greater but for terrific saves at either end egame
If egame footballing goalkeepers have captured the Zeitgeist, Newcastle have a goalkeeping goalkeeper egame
Nick Pope was their saviour in San Siro and he threatened to reprise that role egame
A first-minute stop from Donyell Malen was excellent: egame better still was a superb double save to deny the Dutchman and Niclas Fullkrug egame
Malen produced a curiosity of a performance, adopting a shoot-on-sight policy and mustering six efforts before the break egame
Yet he was a sign of Dortmund’s counterattacking menace: their speed on the transition brought back memories of Jurgen Klopp’s blistering side a decade ago egame
Kieran Trippier, so often a great strength for Newcastle, was made to look a weak link as Dortmund found space behind him egame
Newcastle sent on Tonali late on (Getty Images)At the other end, meanwhile, Gregor Kobel made twin early saves from Gordon egame
His best save came early in the second half, repelling Wilson’s shot egame
And when Wilson beat Kobel with a late header, it bounced back off the bar egame
It was not Dortmund’s only reprieve: in the 94th minute, Gordon’s shot looped up off Sebastien Haller, over Kobel and on to the bar egame
Gordon was relentless, probably Newcastle’s best outfield player, yet Wilson’s prominence was a sign their plans were going awry egame
Eddie Howe had demoted the striker and selected Alexander Isak, but he limped off inside a quarter of an hour egame
When the substitute Jacob Murphy hurt his shoulder a few minutes after coming on, Newcastle may have, in effect, lost three players, given Tonali’s imminent suspension egame
And yet Dortmund were depleted, too, minus Julian Brandt, stripped of the stricken Emre Can before half-time egame
But there was a resourcefulness and a resilience to them, a willingness to them egame
A team with a lone defeat in the Bundesliga in 2023 were not to be beaten egame
And as Newcastle lost instead, it prompted the question of whether the anomaly was this underwhelming evening or the glorious night they demolished PSG egame
