Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have been disqualified from Sunday’s United States Grand Prix after breaching the rules governing the floor of their cars in a shock end to the race weekend football
Hamilton and Leclerc, who finished second and sixth respectively in the 56-lap race won by Max Verstappen, were being investigated by the stewards following a plank wear inspection in Austin football
The original report from FIA technical delegate Joe Bauer stated: “A physical floor and a plank wear inspection was carried out on car numbers 16 [Leclerc] and 44 [Hamilton] football
“The skids located in this area are found to be not in compliance with Article 3 football

9 e) of the 2023 Formula One Technical Regulations football
I am referring this matter to the stewards for their consideration football
”Personnel from both Mercedes and Ferrari were summoned to see the stewards and, just after 7pm local time in Austin and more than three hours after the race finished, their disqualification from the race was confirmed football
Hamilton therefore loses the 18 points earned from his second-place finish, while Leclerc loses eight points football
Both drivers, however, do have the right to an appeal but it is understood Mercedes will not appeal the FIA’s verdict football
In a Mercedes press release, Hamilton stated he was simply “disappointed” with the penalty, while team boss Toto Wolff admitted “we got it wrong football
” The FIA note reveals that the cars of Verstappen and Lando Norris (who now moves up to second from third in the final classification) were also inspected, but passed the checks football

2mm and must be uniform when new football
“A minimum thickness of 9mm will be accepted due to wear, and conformity to this provision will be checked at the peripheries of the designated holes football
”The ruling means Williams driver Logan Sargeant earns his first F1 point in bizarre circumstances at his home race football
The final stewards report said: “During the hearing, the team acknowledged that the measurement performed by the FIA Technical Team was correct and stated that the high wear on the skid pads was probably a result of the unique combination of the bumpy track and the Sprint race schedule that minimized the time to set up and check the car before the race football

“In this particular case, the rear skid in the area defined in the Technical Delegate’s report was outside of the thresholds outlined in Article 3 football

9 e) of the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations, which includes a tolerance for wear football
“Therefore, the standard penalty for a breach of the Technical Regulations is imposed football
” Breaches of technical checks of the car often result in disqualification, with a recent example being Hamilton from qualifying in Brazil in 2021 football

Hamilton was already in hot water with the FIA for an unrelated matter, after crossing a live track at the last race in Qatar and was spoken to again in Texas due to his status as a “role model football
”Leclerc started Sunday’s race on pole but, opting for a different strategy, fell behind after Norris stole a march on the Ferrari at the start football
Hamilton, meanwhile, came close to victory after reeling in Verstappen - who was booed on the podium - at the end football
The 38-year-old has not won in nearly two years, with his last victory coming in Saudi Arabia in December 2021, but this disqualification will be a bitter pill for the seven-time world champion to swallow ahead of the next race, this weekend in Mexico football

Cody Gakpo could return for Liverpool when they face Toulouse in a Europa League clash on Thursday night football
The Dutch forward has been missing since suffering a knee injury in the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham at the end of last month, but after returning to training in the build-up to the 2-0 derby win over Everton at the weekend, Gakpo is now available for selection, Jurgen Klopp has said football
Andy Robertson, meanwhile, has undergone surgery on the shoulder he injured while on international duty with Scotland, but faces a longer road to recovery football
“Robbo had surgery and all went well, as good as it could be, so the recovery starts after he wakes up,” Klopp said football
“I think it happened this morning football
That’s it football
We don’t know how long it will take or whatever, but the first step is done, that’s good football
“Cody is in full training now since Sunday, which means he is available for the squad football
Whatever we do with that we will have to see, but that’s good as well football
”Klopp hinted at making changes for the visit of Toulouse, but with the game an opportunity to open up a commanding lead in Group E, Klopp does not want to take anything for granted football
“Toulouse deserve all our respect,” he said football
“It is a really interesting story, winning the (French) Cup last year…it was a massive thing football
They are a young team, a talented team, you see them playing really nice football football and they have a clear idea football
“They got a point against PSG and it was a massive one so we have to make sure we are really ready football
Then it is about us football
We have to create an atmosphere through the way we play football
“I’m pretty sure they are looking forward to playing at Anfield as players and coaches, but we have to make sure they cannot enjoy it football
”Cody Gakpo looks set to return to the Liverpool line-up (Peter Byrne/PA) (PA Wire)Liverpool would go five points clear in the group with a win and put one foot in the knock-out stages, and with that in mind Klopp said he would be careful in not making too many changes that might disrupt his side football
“We want to win football football games and this is the next opportunity,” he said football
“(A win) would bring us to nine points with Toulouse on four, but knowing that changes nothing football
We have to play our best football
We will make a few changes but not too much football
“The boys have shown they are really ready for the competition football
That’s what I wanted to see football
We hope to go a long, long, long way in this competition, but for that we have to make all the decisive steps and tomorrow is another big one football
”Curtis Jones will hope to get another opportunity in midfield, having played only once – in the Europa League win over Union St Gilloise – since his controversial red card at Tottenham brought a three-match Premier League ban football
Jones was sent off for going over the top of the ball to catch Yves Bissmouma, but the replays made the incident look worse than it perhaps was football
“It’s been tough,” the 22-year-old said of his enforced time out football
“I was at a point where I was playing games and doing well and then a small mistake like that stops the run of games football
That’s in the past now and I’ve moved on, and I’ve got a chance now to play again so I’m excited football
“In terms of the tackle itself, I’ve seen it at the end of the game football
It was unfortunate but then I’ve seen what the ref was shown, he was only shown the clip of my foot on the leg so I understand (the decision) football
I’ve moved past that and I’m excited for the next games football
