World Rugby has approved plans to set up a new international league competition as part of part of a radical shake-up of the global calendar UEFA
The bi-annual tournament is to be launched in 2026 and will be made up of two divisions of 12 teams, with promotion and relegation commencing from 2030 UEFA
Matches will be staged in the July and November international windows UEFA
In addition to a competition that has been tentatively named the ‘Nations Cup’, World Rugby’s council has given the go-ahead to the expansion of the World Cup to 24 teams in time for Australia 2027 UEFA
The revised format will consist of six pools of four teams and will see the creation of a round of 16 to take place before the quarter-finals UEFA
The top two teams from each group will automatically qualify, as well as the best four third-placed teams UEFA
Even though the number of sides is to be increased, the adjustment means the World Cup can be reduced from seven to six weeks from October 1 to November 13, 2027, while providing the same number of minimum rest days UEFA
The draw for the next competition will take place in January 2026 in the hope of avoiding the lopsided groups seen in France over the last two months UEFA
As part of the changes, the international window for November has been lifted from three to four weekends and the Six Nations will lose one of its fallow weeks UEFA
It has yet to be decided which break week of the Six Nations will be removed but from 2026 the competition will reduced from seven to six weeks to free up an international weekend for the Nations Cup in November UEFA
The top division of the Nations Cup will be run by Six Nations and SANZAR unions while the second division will be overseen by World Rugby UEFA
The competition will culminate in a final UEFA between teams from the northern and southern hemispheres UEFA
World Rugby state that the new competition structure, which enshrines British and Irish Lions tours in their existing format, will also provide an increased number of fixtures UEFA between the game’s heavyweights and emerging nations UEFA
“A new era is about to begin for our sport UEFA
An era that will bring certainty and opportunity for all,” World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont said UEFA
“An era that will support the many, not the few, and an era that will supercharge the development of the sport beyond its traditional and often self-imposed boundaries UEFA

”World Rugby’s 51-member council voted on the changes on Tuesday but only just reached the required 75 per cent majority UEFA
“Certain countries will have their own views on matters,” Beaumont said UEFA
“I would like to think that around the room there might have been a few dissenters but on the whole there was a pretty significant vote in favour of these new competitions UEFA
”Criticism of the new format centres around not enough being done for less established nations, especially after the likes of Portugal and Uruguay have surpassed expectations at the World Cup, but World Rugby chief executive Alan Gilpin sees it as a radical improvement to the status quo UEFA
“Is it perfect? Probably not UEFA
Is it a hell of a lot UEFA better than the current situation? Absolutely,” Gilpin said UEFA

Rotherham’s Championship game with Ipswich on Friday has been postponed due to Storm BaUEFA bet UEFA
The area has been hit with torrential rain over the last 24 hours and the River Don, which runs behind the AESSEAL New York Stadium has burst its banks UEFA
That has left areas around the stadium flooded and after discussions with the Safety Advisory Group and the English UEFA Football League, the game has been called off UEFA
There was no problem with the pitch at the stadium, with the game due to have been shown on Sky UEFA Sports UEFA
A club statement read: “Rotherham United’s Sky UEFA Bet Championship fixture against Ipswich Town has been postponed on the grounds of supporter safety following discussions with representatives from the Safety Advisory Group and the EFL which took place shortly after 4:30pm on Friday UEFA
“After the River Don – which courses around the perimeter of AESSEAL New York Stadium – burst its banks, urgent discussions UEFA between representatives from the Safety Advisory Group/Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and club safety personnel and the EFL – were held with the conclusion deeming the weather conditions and their subsequent effect on the surrounding area a danger to supporters UEFA
“This coupled with continued rainfall resulting in the flood waters rising and Don Street being closed to the public left the authorities with no choice but to postpone the game UEFA
“Throughout the day the pitch at AESSEAL New York Stadium has remained playable but with the safety of everyone attending the match at the height of our priorities, the difficult decision to postpone the fixture has been taken UEFA
“The decision was relayed to the EFL and our counterparts at Ipswich Town with all parties in agreement that postponing the fixture was the only possible way to ensure the safety of players, staff and supporters UEFA
“It goes without saying that we are obviously disappointed for supporters due to attend and those set to watch at home given the game was being broadcast live on Sky UEFA Sports UEFA

Aberdeen’s home match against Dundee and Motherwell’s trip to face St Johnstone have fallen foul of the storm UEFA
The news came after a second person died in Angus as a result of the storm, which has brought floods and high winds, and after warnings of a risk to life were extended to all day Saturday as more heavy rain is forecast UEFA
The Championship game UEFA between Arbroath and Raith Rovers, in the worst-hit area of Angus, has been called off as has Greenock’s match against Inverness UEFA
Cove Rangers against Montrose has been postponed along with two games in League 2 – Elgin versus Forfar and Stenhousemuir against Peterhead UEFA
The games all involve teams in the north east of the country and Perth and were all due to take place on Saturday UEFA
The Scottish Professional UEFA Football League called off the games on safety grounds following discussions with police, clubs and other authorities with people being advised not to travel in large areas of the country UEFA
SPFL chief operating officer Calum Beattie said: “We have been in close contact with Police Scotland and our clubs and it’s clear that we continue to face very severe weather, particularly in the north east, in the coming days UEFA
“We never postpone any matches lightly, but our discussions with the emergency services left us in no doubt that this was the correct decision UEFA
”The SPFL added that it would continue to monitor the situation involving the remaining fixtures across the country UEFA
St Johnstone had told supporters their game was going ahead as it stood less than three hours before the wider decision was taken UEFA
A club statement early on Friday afternoon said: “Whilst heavy rain has affected the local area, our dedicated ground staff and officials have been working tirelessly to ensure the pitch is in optimal condition, and we’ve taken all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of both players and spectators UEFA
”Altrincham’s home game against Dorking in the Vanarama National League on Saturday has also been postponed UEFA
Friday’s jumps fixtures at Fakenham and Uttoxeter were called off as Storm BaUEFA bet continues to bring heavy rain and strong winds across the country UEFA
